Todays Flickr 21 Day Birthday Photo Challenge is “Inspiration” which I puzzled over for a short time, but the subject was easily answered by my photographic inspirations, some of whom are set out here in this photo of a small selection of my photobooks.
My favourite genre is photography from the UK (not necessarily “street photography”, but the streets and architecture) from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. I grew up in the city of Leeds in West Yorkshire through the 70’s and 80’s and it should come as no great surprise that I love the work of Peter Mitchell who photographed much of the city in the 70’s and 80’s (and later). It really helps me reminisce on where I grew up (I haven’t lived in Leeds now for over 30 years), there’s even a shot of my late Grandfather’s place of work in one of the books.
You can also see more books which include Bradford (Ian Beesley) Liverpool (Martin Parr), The North (John Bulmer) and the South (particularly London) (Don McCullin). Of course, all these photographers photographed many other areas/subjects, but the books here do lean towards/include the subjects and the areas mentioned.
