035-365v5 – Fly Past

We don’t often get planes overhead here (very different from where we used to live when we were only 8 miles from Stansted Airport). This United Airlines plane caught my eye as it was heading straight in front of the rising moon. I rushed to get my camera to catch it before it passed the moon, but didn’t make it…so I photographed the plane and then the moon separately and photoshopped the result to show what had just happened.

This wasn’t as straight forward a photoshop job as I was expecting as I had to adjust the colours to match and carefully mask in the contrail over the moon. For those who are interested I used a blend mode of “Lighten” to get started which caused the colour mismatch referred to above.

The plane isn’t as sharp as I would have hoped because I was shooting through a double glazed velux window which is angled to the roof…definitely doesn’t help sharpness!

I prefer the black and white shot, but I’ve included the original colour version below.
