A continuation of my Black and White Unite series…and the title is not an indication that this is the last one.

This is becoming an interesting project. I started out making the pattern backgrounds in Photoshop, I’ve now progressed onto using Adobe Illustrator as well, a program that I have used before but certainly don’t know how to use at all properly. This means the production of the backgrounds takes longer (much longer) than the photography!

As I work out how to do these images better I’m considering going back and re-doing some of the earlier shots, just so they are as good as they can be.

It’ll be interesting to enter some of these into photographic competitions, I’m not sure they will do well, I can hear two of the comments that judges will make, firstly they are too simple and secondly they are “studio” shots, so you are in complete control of the lighting etc (I’m not sure why this is said as a criticism, but there you have it!). This doesn’t worry me at all, they are striking images (IMO) and I’ve enjoyed making them and I do photography for my own pleasure, not a judges, but we all enjoy positive comments about our photography. The judges in these competitions generally only see one image in isolation and series of images are always stronger when seen, as they should be, as a panel of images together. Only the RPS (Royal Photographic Society) tend to consider images in this way.

This isn’t a criticism of camera club judges, by the way. They have a difficult job to do, viewing many images generally only for a short time and having to come up with spot judgements, I just might not always agree with those spot judgements 😉

I had a play with an overhead shot of this image in photoshop and came up with some interesting blended options, the original overjead shot was a little dull, I think the blended versions are a lot more interesting.
